Support :: Popup Blockers
Useful Popups
There are however many situations where popup windows are a valid and helpful utility and it is in these situations that popup blocking becomes a hindrance rather than a help when browsing the web. If for instance you have your blocker set to block absolutely all popups then you may not be able to login, use contact forms on some sites or open help windows with required information etc. Often accessibility information is presented in a new window. Please see the section below for information on allowing specific popups.
Annoying Popups
One of the most annoying things on the world wide web is the abuse of website popup windows. These are windows that open automatically when you enter or leave a web page often in the form of advertising or other sites that run advertising and fake or misleading advertisements suggesting that your computer is at risk or has a virus etc. Some unscrupulous operators open the windows in a part of the screen that is not visible to you (pop-unders) where the only clue that you have is that there is another item in your task bar. Most of these are aimed at the unsuspecting general web user and are generating revenue for that website or organisation.
This type of misuse of popup windows has led to the development of special popup blocking utilities. Some Web Browsers also have popup blocking options built into them.
Website Popups from Nowhere
Due to the unfortunate abuse of popup windows that has been widespread in recent years Linx Data Ltd. endeavour to design Web Sites without popup windows wherever possible. There are however occasions where the opening of a new window is the best course to fulfil a certain requirement.
In these pages we provide information on the most common popup blocking utilities both third party (i.e. plug in browser toolbars etc.) or the built in popup blockers such as the ones that come with IE6, Mozilla, Firefox 1.5, Netscape 8 and Opera 9 etc.

Test Your Popup Blocker
You can test your Popup Blocker by going to our Popup Blocker test page. (Pops up in a new window.) - Only Kidding! The Popup Blocker test page will however attempt to open a Popup as soon as you reach it.
Unethical Toolbars
Linx Data Ltd. do not recommend that you install any toolbar other than the ones listed above. Many companies unfortunately use free toolbars to implant spyware or malware on your computer to import advertisements or possibly even viruses to your machine; this is unethical. The Toolbars listed above do not to the best or our knowledge contain spyware at this time.
Spyware
If you get similar pop-up windows no matter what sites you visit or even if you're not on the Web at all, you could have spyware, adware, or other software on your computer that's launching pop-ups. To stop these pop-ups, you will have to identify the software, then remove it or change its settings to stop it from launching pop-ups. To learn more about this read How to Protect Your Computer from Spyware and Adware.
